Poison Specialists
Nurses and pharmacists at the NC Poison Control Center are Specialists in Poison Information (SPIs).  They answer the phones and chats at the poison control center and provide the medical advice to callers and chatters.  All of our SPIs are registered nurses or pharmacists intensively trained in toxicology. They are required to pass a rigorous national certification exam administered by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. Currently, there are 18 SPIs serving the residents of North Carolina.

Toxicologists 
Toxicologists at NC Poison Control provide clinical supervision and back-up support for the specialists. They are available 24 hours a day for consultations with healthcare providers and are responsible for delivering continuing education courses to staff and other healthcare professionals. The toxicology staff consists of the following positions:

  • Medical Director
  • Medical Toxicologists
  • Clinical Toxicologist
  • Toxicology Fellows

Administrators and Educator
The NC Poison Control administration staff ensures that the poison control center is running smoothly and efficiently 365 days a year. The public education staff creates poison prevention education materials for diverse audiences and provides educational programs for other healthcare providers and educators. The administration and education staff consists of the following positions:

  • Director of Business Operations
  • Assistant Director of Operations
  • Staff Assistant
  • Content & Education Strategist
